WhatsApp Coexistence Setup Guide
Meta WhatsApp Coexistence combines the power and scalability of the WhatsApp Business API with the convenience and familiarity of the WhatsApp Business App, on the same number. This guide walks you through what the feature is, its benefits, the risks involved, how to set it up, and how to troubleshoot common issues.
WhatsApp Coexistence Setup Guide
The Problem: The Old Way of Using the WhatsApp API
- The 24-hour reply window: you were forced to use pre-approved templates if you wanted to reply to a customer after 24 hours.
- Loss of the Business App: switching to API-only meant giving up the convenience of replying on your phone with the WhatsApp Business App.
- No voice calling: with an API-only setup, you couldn't make voice calls to customers, which made it harder to have the important conversations that close deals faster.
The Solution: WhatsApp Coexistence
Coexistence connects your number to the powerful ABC Salesbot API while keeping your mobile Business App active. No more choosing between convenience and power:
- Automate and scale with the API: use AI chatbots and integrations in ABC Salesbot to handle conversations efficiently, qualify leads, and send media files, all automatically.
- Keep your contacts and history: your existing phone contacts and up to 6 months of chat history get imported automatically, so you don't lose important customer information.
- Bypass the 24-hour window for manual replies: jump into conversations anytime from your phone for a personal touch. No templates needed after 24 hours when you reply from the app.
- Make voice calls again: unlike API-only setups, you can make and receive voice calls directly from your Business App.

Key Considerations and Limitations
Please review these trade-offs before connecting your account:
- Not for large broadcasts: this feature is NOT suitable for large, time-sensitive broadcasts (e.g., a webinar with over 500 registrants). Messaging speed is limited, which can cause significant delays for large audiences.
- Messaging speed cap: all messages sent via Coexistence are limited to approximately 5 messages per second.
- Some app features are disabled: after connecting, some features in your WhatsApp Business App will be disabled, including message editing, disappearing messages, and view-once messages.
- No group or broadcast sync: group chats and broadcast lists from your phone will not sync with the ABC platform.
Your Pre-Flight Checklist
Follow this safety-first approach before connecting:
- Start with a NEW phone number. Get a fresh SIM card and number specifically for testing this feature. This isolates any potential issues from your main business line.
- "Warm up" the new number. Install the WhatsApp Business App on a phone with the new number and use it for regular chats for at least 7 days to build a history of legitimate activity. Actively chat back and forth with 5 to 10 different people daily. (Some users report success after just 1 hour, so you can try your luck.)
- Use a healthy Meta Business Portfolio. Connect your new number to a Meta Business Portfolio that is already in good standing, ideally one with a previously approved WhatsApp number. New portfolios are often scrutinised more heavily by Meta.

Coexistence Dos and Don'ts
Do This
- Open the WhatsApp Business App at least once every 13 days to keep the API live.
- Use the mobile app for quick 1-to-1 replies, since those are free.
- Re-link WhatsApp Web/Desktop after onboarding, because previous sessions are logged out.
- Monitor the ABC dashboard for device offline alerts.
- Test the full flow with a sandbox number first.
Don't Do This
- Don't uninstall the app. Doing so breaks Coexistence until you re-onboard.
- Don't assume app replies extend the 24-hour service window for API messages. They don't.
- Don't share the phone number's SMS OTP outside trusted staff. Losing it lets anyone hijack the API link.
- Don't send template or bulk messages from the phone. Those must be sent via the CRM/API.
- Don't onboard numbers from restricted regions: AU, EU/EEA, UK, IN, JP, NG, PH, RU, KR, ZA, TR.
Following these best practices is key to a stable and successful connection.
